Opening Day streaming is ‘out’ of the question for baseball fans

Efforts to enable baseball fans to stream their hometown teams' games by Opening Day have struck out, The Post has learned.

Regional sports networks like SportsNet New York and the Yes Network had hoped to reach a deal with Major League Baseball by the start of the 2015 season — but the two sides have failed to find common ground, sources said.

While talks remain active, with just days before the 2015 season's first pitch, a deal is not likely by Game 1 or anytime in the near future, sources said.

MLB announced a deal this week with Dish Network that could lead to in-market streaming — but the satellite pay-TV provider needs to reach separate deals with Fox-owned Yes and SportsNet New York (SNY).

A deal with Yes or SNY — or any other regional sports networks, known as RSNs — is not likely as RSNs are trying to win those rights from MLB, a source close to the situation said.

MLB.com would stream the in-market games ordered through Dish, the source said.

Fox Sports, which owns 15 of the 30 RSNs that carry MLB games, and Comcast, which owns stakes in six, including SNY, are locked in tense negotiations with baseball over in-market streaming.

Both Fox and Comcast want exclusive streaming rights and do not want to share them with Dish or MLB.com, sources said.

"They want to compete against MLB.com," one source noted.

Baseball is not giving in on its demand to show games locally on MLB.com. The RSNs want to stream in-market games only on their own platforms.

The Dish-MLB deal could — once AT&T receives expected regulatory clearance to buy DirectTV this summer — allow near-immediate in-market streaming of Mariners, Pirates, Rockies and Astros games.

That could put pressure on Fox and Comcast. DirecTV is the RSN for those teams, and is not taking as strong a view on exclusivity with MLB, sources said.

MLB and Comcast declined to comment on the matter. Fox did not return calls
