Menendez expected to soon face corruption-related charges

Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey is expected to face federal corruption-related criminal charges on Wednesday, according to CNN.

The charges against Menendez – the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee – are expected to relate to his dealings with friend and donor Dr. Salomon Melgen, a Florida-based eye doctor, according to reports.

The FBI in New Jersey and Florida has been investigating Menendez's activities, several law enforcement sources have said since last year. He is accused of using his office to promote Melgen's business interests in exchange for gifts.

The feds and Menendez's lawyers have discussed plans for him to turn himself in before a court hearing in Florida Thursday, CNN reported, citing people briefed on the case.

Although the charges are expected to be filed Wednesday, the government could still change its plans, CNN reported.

The US Justice Department in Washington declined to comment Wednesday. The US Attorney's office in Miami said it was the policy of the Justice Department to neither confirm nor deny the existence of a criminal probe.

Menendez's spokeswoman also said she would not comment.

In 2010, Menendez took plane to the Dominican Republic as Melgen's guest. Three years later, after word of the federal probe emerged, he paid back Melgen $58,000 for the plane trips – saying his failure to properly disclose the flights was an "oversight," CNN reported.

Menendez – who described his relationship with Melgen as a close friendship – has said he has done nothing wrong and had no plans to leave his Senate seat.

Melgen, whose medical offices were raided two years ago, has not been cooperating with prosecutors against Menendez, the Associated Press reported, citing a source who was not authorized to comment on the record.
