Playing the long-suffering wife or girlfriend can be a thankless role in Hollywood, but British actress Felicity Jones has gotten plenty of gratitude: She received Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations earlier this year for her turn as Stephen Hawking's spouse in "The Theory of Everything." Next up, she plays another spouse with a challenging partner in "True Story," out April 17. The film is indeed based on a true story about journalist Mike Finkel (Jonah Hill), who struck up an unlikely friendship with convicted murderer Christian Longo (James Franco).

Jones plays Finkel's wife, Jill, and she spent a great deal of time talking with the actual Jill about her experiences to flesh out the character.
"I feel like 'wife' or 'girlfriend' has this terrible reputation [as roles for women], but I think she absolutely has to be just as interesting as the male character, she has to be a vital person," Jones tells The Post. "Even if you're doing a supporting role and you're not on-screen all the time, I think it's important [the audience] feels that person has a life beyond the screen."
Mike Finkel initially became aware of Longo in 2002, shortly after being fired from the New York Times for fabricating parts of a big story. In the throes of depression, he learned there was a convicted killer who'd been living under his identity in Mexico and had recently been caught. The two began talking and corresponding, first via mail and eventually via in-person visits. Longo took a special interest in Jill — especially creepy, given that Longo's crime was killing his wife and three children. Jill and Longo never met in real life, but in the film they do.
"Christian would ask about Jill, she became part of this — in some way — romance between these two [men]," says Jones.
The role is the latest in a series of smart, psychologically intense films for the 31-year-old Jones, an Oxford grad. She found fame in the US after her performance in the 2011 film "Like Crazy," for which she won a special jury prize at Sundance, but she's also made a name for herself in big-budget, tentpole flicks.

Last year, she played Felicia Hardy, assistant to Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper) and then his son Harry (Dane DeHaan) in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." Will she be back in the next installment?
"You know as much as me!" says Jones. "I loved making that film, and I loved playing her, but I don't know what the plan is."
More dramatically, it was announced just last month that Jones will star in a new "Star Wars" spinoff movie — placing her squarely in the ranks of actors who make Comic-Con attendees squeal. About that film, however, she is able to say even less: "I can't talk about it," she says simply. "But I'm very excited to be a part of that world. I wasn't even born when the first movie came out, but it's one of those franchises that you grow up with — it's a part of your childhood. I remember the theme music having a very powerful effect on me."
Also powerful was the effect of making the rounds of the awards shows this winter. "It was like nothing else I've ever experienced," she says. "It was hard work! You realize how passionate you have to be about the film you're talking about, and with this film ["The Theory of Everything"], I felt so strongly about it. But it's also magical — you get to meet these extraordinary people. I met Meryl Streep!"

She also supported Reese Witherspoon's "Ask Her More" campaign, demanding that red carpet reporters quiz actresses on serious topics, not just hair, makeup and dresses.
"You want to talk about the work that you spent so long on!" Jones says. "The same as with male actors."
But the introspective actress, who recently ended a long-term relationship with visual artist Ed Fornieles, admits she also welcomed the conclusion of awards season.
Based in New York, she's currently in Europe for the summer. "I was definitely happy to have a bit of a break afterward," she says, "and read a book, and not have to talk to anyone!"
