Sinead O'Connor is done performing the tune that made her famous: "Nothing Compares 2 U."
"The first principle of the manner in which I'm trained as a singer (Bel Canto) is we never sing a song we don't emotionally identify with," the 48-year-old singer explained in a lengthy Facebook note posted on Monday.
"After twenty-five years of singing it, nine months or so ago I finally ran out of anything I could use in order to bring some emotion to it," she elaborated. "I don't want audiences to be disappointed coming to a show and then not hearing it, so am letting you know here you won't."
O'Connor says it's not the first song she's stopped singing over the years.
Above all, she believes her job is not to entertain but to be "emotionally available" for audiences. Doing anything else, according to her, would be a lie. "My job is to give you honesty," she wrote.
While some fans on her page completely understood her point of view, others pleaded with her to continue singing the tune.
"Even if it does not stir emotion for you, it does for others," wrote one commenter. "Just a consideration."
"Bad decision," wrote another fan. "It's an absolute classic and you made it so."
