Scoop on big ‘Dig’: USA tackles int’l murder mystery

Much of USA's new event series "Dig" centers on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

It's one of the most contested pieces of real estate in the world — a fact underscored last summer when violence erupted there between Israelis and Palestinians, forcing the "Dig" production to move from Jerusalem to Croatia and New Mexico.

But Thursday's 90-minute premiere was shot entirely in Jerusalem — visually and thematically setting up the 10-episode (closed-ended) story of a murder mystery in the Holy Land.

"All of Jerusalem hums with history and the blood and passion of the world's major religions and civilizations and the[ir] sacrifices and pain," star Jason Issacs tells The Post. "The things that they will do in the service of what they believe in is the danger that our story is about."

Isaacs ("Awake") stars as our anti-hero, FBI agent Peter Connelly, who is estranged from his wife, reeling from the death of his daughter and engaged in a casual sexual relationship with his boss, Lynn Monahan (played by Anne Heche). When he begins investigating the murder of an American archaeology student in Jerusalem, he learns he might not be the only one searching for answers.

"He's doing his job fine, but as a human being he's allowed himself to become totally frozen. That's where you find him," Isaacs says. "Right at the beginning of the story he meets a young woman and it sparks something off in him, and who knows where that's going to take him."

"Dig" hails from co-creators Gideon Raff ("Homeland") and Tim Kring ("Heroes"), who combined their backgrounds — Raff as a Jerusalem native and Kring with his degree in religious studies — for the drama.

"Only about 5 percent of Jerusalem has actually been excavated. Everywhere you dig you uncover some kind of mystery with historical significance," Kring tells The Post. "It seemed like it tapped into that intriguing idea of unearthing the past and the thing that we all love about movies like 'Indiana Jones' and 'The DaVinci Code,' where you unearth hidden treasures."

The drama jumps between multiple storylines based on real events and prophecies — the murder mystery in Jerusalem, a Hasidic group in Norway which has bred a pure red heifer in accordance with scripture and a religious cult in New Mexico looking to bring about the second coming of Christ.

In the vein of Kring's past sci-fi dramas, Connelly eventually gets drawn into all of these arcs as his murder investigation uncovers an ancient conspiracy.

"I was playing with some of the same ideas of disparate stories that then converge and collide with one another," Kring says. "Part of the fun for the audience is participating in that idea of when and how these stories are going to come together."
