TAMPA — Bobby Parnell won't begin the season with the Mets, but Wednesday cleared another hurdle in his rehab from Tommy John surgery.

The right-hander pitched a scoreless inning in Port St. Lucie against Triple-A New Orleans in his first game action in nearly a year.

According to reports, Parnell's fastball was mostly in the 90 mph range. He topped out at 92. But Parnell — who routinely flirted with triple-digits on the radar gun two years ago — explained he wanted to avoid overthrowing, so he wasn't concerned about the velocity.

"I hope to return in May, but I'll let my body and arm tell me when I'm ready to come back," Parnell said.

The Mets are prepared to begin the season with Jenrry Mejia as the closer, but manager Terry Collins has said Parnell will have an opportunity to win back his old job.

Daniel Murphy (hamstring) resumed baseball activities by hitting from a tee. The Mets are hopeful he can begin taking at-bats this weekend and possibly be ready for Opening Day.

Wilmer Flores participated in infield drills and could return to the lineup Thursday. He had rested since Sunday, when he fouled a ball off his left foot.

There is still no favorite in the lefty relief competition, but Sean Gilmartin didn't hurt his chances with 1¹/₃ scoreless innings against the Yankees. Dario Alvarez and Scott Rice are the other lefties in major league camp, but Collins also is taking a look at Duane Below from minor-league camp.

Gilmartin, a Rule 5 pick from the Twins, struggled early in camp, but hasn't allowed a run in his last three appearances. Against the Yankees on Sunday, he threw 1 ²/₃ shutout innings.

"For me that is back-to-back very good outings for Sean Gilmartin," Collins said. "He's throwing breaking balls for strikes. He can pitch them in, he's used his changeup and he's pitched very well. [But] right now it's wide open."

Zack Wheeler underwent "successful" Tommy John surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, according to the Mets. The right-hander also had a flexor pronator tendon repaired.
