Mets’ pups get some spring training of their own

No underdogs here!

The wives and girlfriends of Mets players are turning a practice field into a makeshift dog park as their beaus bone up on their games at spring training in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Tayler Francel, girlfriend of catcher Kevin Plawecki, wrangles her golden retriever Bailey; Bethany Nieuwenhuis, wife of outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis, snuggles her 4-month-old German shepherd Barkley; Kelly Recker, wife of catcher Anthony Recker, pets her mixed-breed pup Sheya; Christine den Dekker, wife of outfielder Matt den Dekker, shows off her Jack Russell terrier Wilson; Maegan Parnell, wife of pitcher Bobby Parnell, cuddles her golden retriever-yellow lab mix Abby; Britney Cobian, girlfriend of catcher Travis d'Arnaud, hugs her dog Riley.

"He is such a menace. But a really cute menace!" Christine den Dekker tweeted about Wilson, who broke away from the pack to chase away a visitor.

Relief pitcher Parnell adopted his adorable pooch Abby after meeting her at the Mets annual "Bark in the Park," a Citi Field event to support rescue animals, in 2010. She's become his good-luck charm.

The fireballer's wife explained of the recent pooch get-together that "the husbands have a chance to bond . . . We want our dogs to be on a first-name basis with each other during the year."
