Gleaning a Lundqvist timeline from default Rangers response

Here's the closest thing to a possible timeline for the return of Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist — he won't be on their upcoming three-game road trip, finishing Saturday in Buffalo.

There was the standard "no update" on his status from the team and coach Alain Vigneault after Monday's practice, before which Lundqvist continued his recovery from a sprained blood vessel in his neck by working out on the ice and taking low shots. It's assumed everything is going according to plan, but he won't be ready at least for the next three games.

Following Tuesday's match at the Coliseum against the Islanders, the Rangers will go to Washington for Wednesday night's prime-time game against the Capitals, and then will stay in the nation's capital until they leave for Buffalo on Friday in anticipation of Saturday night's game against the woeful Sabres.

The Blueshirts return home for a 5 p.m. start against the Panthers at the Garden on Sunday, but one would have to imagine Lundqvist would like at least one practice before getting into a game. He has not yet been cleared for contact — meaning shots above the waist — and the team said any change in status would be relayed.

He last played on Feb. 2, the game after he was hurt, and the team has gone 11-2-3 in his absence.

Lundqvist's understudy, Cam Talbot, has started 15 of the past 16 games, putting up a 2.44 goals-against average and an impressive .917 save percentage during that span.

Talbot also went 2-0-1 over the past week with a 0.99 goals-against, earning him the NHL's third star of the week.

He will get another go Tuesday against the first-place Islanders.

"He's done what you want goaltenders to do — that's give your team a chance to win," Vigneault said.

After a terrific performance in Sunday night's 1-0 overtime win in Chicago, Talbot said his confidence is growing.

"It just keeps building from game to game right now," he said after Monday's practice. "Just trying to stay focused, stayed poised and make the saves when I can. Give the guys a chance to win."

Vigneault confirmed gritty forward Tanner Glass will return to the lineup after being a healthy scratch in the previous two games.

Glass will replace Jimmy Sheppard, who came over from the Sharks in a trade-deadline acquisition and played admirably in his first two games as a Ranger.

"Tanner was playing well before," is how Vigneault explained the decision. "I wanted to take a look at Shep. We've got 13 healthy forwards, they're all playing well. I think it's time for Tanner to come back in."

All signs indicate defenseman Matt Hunwick will remain a healthy scratch for the sixth straight game, playing just two of the previous nine.
