Fox Searchlight Pictures, the Hollywood studio behind "Birdman," and IFC Productions, which produced "Boyhood," could have $25 million, or more, riding on Sunday night's Oscar show.
That's how much in added revenue the winning movie could pull in from video-on-demand sales, according to recent Hollywood history.
Both films are long out of theaters.
"Birdman" had a US box office of $36.7 million and is regarded as even-money to win an Oscar, according to Wynn's Race & Sports Book. "Boyhood" brought in $25.2 million, according to boxofficemojo, and is listed at 6-to-5 to win Best Picture.
"The Hurt Locker," which won a Best Picture Oscar in 2009, had a box office of $17 million — but then pulled in $20 million in US DVD and Blu-ray sales in the nine weeks after the Academy Awards show.
Fox Searchlight and IFC appear certain to generate more revenue from VOD views than from DVD sales — and VOD sales are more lucrative in light of the low costs for streaming entertainment into the home.
This potential windfall has already whetted the appetite of the studios and pay-TV distributors alike.
"They're being marketed pretty hard on VOD platforms," Phil Contrino, chief analyst at BoxOffice.com, told The Post's Richard Morgan.
"I'm seeing ads pop up all over cable telling me, 'Be sure to watch the Oscar nominees,' " Contrino said.
Meanwhile, Eddie Redmayne ("Theory of Everything") is the runaway favorite to win Best Actor. Wynn is taking bets at 1-to2. Michael "Birdman" Keaton is second at 9-to-5.
Julianne Moore ("Still Alice") is an even surer bet than Redmayne, according to Wynn. She is attracting so much money that her odds have fallen to 1-to-12. Reese Witherspoon is second at 10-to-1.
Starting Wednesday, Hollywood splits into two distinct groups — those on juice cleanses and those doing the party circuit and draining the Champagne glasses.
