Raiders and Chargers teaming up to try to return NFL to LA

The race to put pro football back in Los Angeles is on.

Apparently unnerved by the Rams' recent moves to return to Los Angeles after a 21-year absence, the Chargers and Raiders released a surprising joint statement Thursday night announcing intentions to construct a joint facility of their own in the L.A. suburb of Carson.

The Chargers and Raiders described the announcement as a dual-track plan contingent on both franchises being unable to reach deals for new stadiums in their current respective cities of San Diego and Oakland.

"We are pursuing this stadium option in Carson for one straightforward reason: If we cannot find a permanent solution in our home markets, we have no alternative but to preserve other options to guarantee the future economic viability of our franchises," the teams said in the statement.

The country's second-largest market has been without an NFL team since the Rams and Raiders left following the 1994 season.

Efforts to put a team back in Los Angeles had gone nowhere until recently, when Rams owner Stan Kroenke announced the purchase of land in Inglewood, Calif., which is located between Carson and L.A., to finance his own stadium. He even gave hints he would move even if his fellow owners didn't approve.

For their part, the Chargers and Raiders said in their statement that they would "respect the rules and procedures set forth by the League and defer completely to the ultimate decision of the NFL's owners."

All three teams — all of which were based in Los Angeles at one point in their history — are operating on year-to-year stadium leases in their current markets.
