Novelist tangled in bizarre custody battle

An acclaimed Brooklyn novelist and filmmaker is in the middle of a stranger-than-fiction breakup — with allegations of insanity, arsenic poisoning, serial cheating and murderous fantasies.

Galt Niederhoffer — whose 2010 film, "The Romantics," starring Katie Holmes and Anna Paquin, was based on her novel of the same title — is battling ex-beau Jonathan Gordon, the in-house counsel for Barry Diller's IAC media company, in three Brooklyn courts.

In a Family Court case over custody of their 2-year-old son, Niederhoffer, 38, claims Gordon, 40, tried to kill her by putting arsenic in her food.

She also says he cheated on her with multiple women — and sought a doctor to deal with his dreams about cutting up her body and dumping the pieces behind their Fort Greene brownstone.

Niederhoffer, an NYU adjunct professor, lost custody of her son last month after her dad — investor and former national squash champ Victor Niederhoffer — joined Gordon in court to claim she was crazy and a danger to the child.

"While it is painful for us to admit, Galt is mentally ill [and] needs psychiatric care," Victor Niederhoffer said in a Jan. 13 affidavit.

But Galt Niederhoffer claims in her affidavit that Gordon is "gaslighting" — a reference to the 1944 Ingrid Bergman film "Gaslight" in which a man convinces his wife she's crazy.

Gordon, who met Niederhoffer in Los Angeles in 2011, says she began falsely accusing him of having affairs in early 2013, according to court papers.

She later claimed in court papers that Gordon admitted "fantasizing about killing me, chopping me up and putting me in the back yard of our home."

She adds Gordon bought her odd-smelling whitefish salad from a Clinton Hill eatery last November. She sent it to a toxicology lab that found high levels of arsenic and other heavy metals, court papers say.

Lab tests also found "high levels of arsenic" in her blood, the affidavit says.

Niederhoffer provides affidavits from famous pals such as film exec Harvey Weinstein, who calls her is "a loving and devoted mother" in a letter.

But she faces an uphill battle to get her son back.

She is facing assault charges for allegedly pushing her stepmom's head to a wall after a hearing.

Gordon is facing domestic-violence charges for allegedly trying to choke her in bed in January.

Niederhoffer declined to comment.

Gordon's lawyer, Sandra Schpoont, said, "Any accusations against Jonathan in her papers are meritless."
