Ghosts of ‘Walking Dead’ past return for midseason premiere

Warning: Contains spoilers

After a lackluster first half of Season 5 that culminated in the death of Beth Greene (Emily Kinney), "The Walking Dead" didn't waste any time during its midseason return — killing off fan favorite Tyreese (Chad Coleman) via a shocking walker bite within the first 30 minutes and reminding fans why they fell in love with the zombie-laden program years ago.

Trying to find a new purpose after losing the younger Greene sister, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), Michonne (Danai Gurira), Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) and Tyreese separated from the rest of the group to return newcomer Noah (Tyler James Williams) to his village nearby.

But once Noah bolted for his childhood home, separating Tyreese and Noah from the others, things took a tragic turn. While staring at photos of Noah and who appeared to be his identical twin brother, Tyreese was ambushed by a walker and bit fatally on his forearm.

And that's when things got weird.

Hallucinations of former "Walking Dead" cast members appeared at Tyreese's side as he began to drift to the afterlife. In addition to the recently deceased Greene, hallucinations appeared of Bob Stookey (Lawrence Gilliard, Jr.) Mika and Lizzie Samuels (Kyla Kennedy, Brighton Sharbino), the Governor (David Morrissey) and cannibal Martin (Chris Coy).

While Beth, Mika, Lizzie and Bob offered comforting words to the dying Tyreese, Martin and the Governor returned to taunt him for his failures in the post-apocalyptic world. As Martin points out, Tyreese's inability to kill Martin led to a dramatic chain of events — the cannibals eating Bob's leg, the attack at the church, Beth's death and lastly Tyreese's walker bite. They tell Tyreese that he was never cut out for this world, that he didn't have it in him to be as ruthless as the others.

And it's possible that they were right.

Meanwhile, Rick, Michonne and Glenn plot the next step in their plan. No longer content to just sit around and see what happens next, Michonne seemingly convinces the others that the best idea may be to stick to the Washington, DC destination. Could this mean we might finally get to see the group in a setting other than the outskirts of Atlanta?

Noah finally manages to bring Rick, Michonne and Glenn to Tyreese's aid, but they're too late. They try amputating Tyreese's arm with the swift cut of Michonne's katana, but he succumbs to the walker bite. Father Gabriel Stokes (Seth Gilliam) presides over the funeral service, attended by a grief-stricken Sasha, Tyreese's sister, who was still healing from the death of boyfriend Bob several episodes back.

The group may be one member short, but with a trip north on the horizon, this may prove to be the most entertaining season yet.
