De Blasio hands off as Staten Island Chuck predicts early spring

It might be a cold, rainy and slushy Monday morning — but Staten Island Chuck had some good news for New Yorkers – there will be an early spring!

Mayor de Blasio was in attendance as the Big Apple's soothsaying rodent didn't see his shadow at the annual Groundhog Day celebration at the Staten Island Zoo.

The news from Pennsylvania was less cheery as Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow at Gobbler's Knob and predicted six more weeks of winter.

Chuck made his prediction from inside of a clear display case as freezing rain pelted New York City.

Last year, the mayor clumsily dropped the weather predicting rodent — who was played by stand-in hog Charlotte — and the animal died a week later from internal injuries.

Much to Chuck's relief, the mayor did not handle him during Monday's ceremony.

According to a German legend, if a groundhog sees its shadow on Feb. 2, winter will last six more weeks. If not, an early spring is expected.

Punxsutawney Phil's forecast is decided beforehand by a group called the Inner Circle on the tiny hill of Gobbler's Knob, about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Phil has predicted a longer winter 101 times while forecasting an early spring only 17 times, according to records dating back to 1887.
