Album of the Week

Bob Dylan

"Shadows in the Night"
★★★
Dylan singing songs Sinatra did could have been 10 kinds of awful, but on the long-anticipated (or should that be "long-feared?") "Shadows in the Night," Uncle Bob snatches a victory from what threatened to be a heavy defeat. Dylan (now 73) and his band handle the selection of standards with care musically, but it's the emotional intimacy of the songs that ensures the album isn't merely an excuse for old-man karaoke. He brings the heartbreak of songs such as "I'm a Fool to Want You" a tangible drama and adds a stately defiance to "Why Try to Change Me Now." His voice might croak a little, but it doesn't matter, because Dylan doesn't just sing these songs, he inhabits them. Somewhere up there, those Ol' Blue Eyes are probably tearing up with pride.

Downloads of the Week

Kid Ink

"Hotel" feat. Chris Brown
★ ½
It's an all-too-familiar feeling; being in a club with your girlfriend, spotting another lady making eyes across the floor, and attempting to solve this precarious situation by suggesting a threesome. This painfully true-to-life scenario that everyone can totally relate to is captured by Los Angeles rapper Kid Ink, whose new track (taken from forgettable new album "Full Speed") is so hilariously silly that it's almost enough to paper over the generic beats and uninspired flows. Almost.

Years & Years

"King"
★★★
The buzz around this hotly tipped British act is palpable and "King" (from their forthcoming debut album) delivers on it. With their blissful '90s beats and singer Olly Alexander's sublime voice, the trio is a good bet to follow in the footsteps of Disclosure in continuing a mainstream house revival. It's an old sound but when Years & Years write songs as good as this, it's hard to complain.

3KT

"Just 13"
★★
They make 'em tough in Jersey. In this nakedly honest song released by Gia Giudice's girl group 3KT, the 13-year-old addresses the difficulties of life under a microscope of reality TV. The daughter of recently imprisoned "Real Housewives" star Teresa reflects on her treatment online and the video also features family pictures and home-video footage. But Gia dusts the dirt off her shoulders; "Mama said be strong," she sings, and while "Just 13" is too slight to be smash-hit material, the teen shows there's definitely no shame in her game.

Courtney Barnett

"Pedestrian at Best"
★★★ ½
It's only February and 2015 already has a song likely to pop up on the year-end best-of lists. Aussie underground-darling Courtney Barnett has made ripples in the indie-rock world, but "Pedestrian at Best" (from her forthcoming debut album) is a wave of piercing riffs and cutting lyrics that poke fun at her own next-big-thing status. "Give me all your money and I'll make some origami, honey," she quips. Pedestrian? Not a chance.
