After spurning Knicks, Kerr can expect boos from MSG crowd

Will Steve Kerr be booed Saturday in his first game at the Garden as head coach, nine months after backing out of a deal with Knicks team president Phil Jackson last spring in order to coach the Warriors?

Does snow fall in February in the Northeast?

"The Garden is the mecca of basketball, it always has a lively crowd, so I wouldn't be surprised if they gave it to him a little bit,'' Warriors assistant coach Luke Walton told The Post. "It's part of the fun playing at the Garden. Fans are always on top of you."

Before the Warriors lost to the Hawks, 124-116, in a potential NBA Finals preview Friday, Kerr said he hasn't thought ahead to his Garden night of reckoning.

"Sometimes I lie to you guys when I say I haven't thought about stuff,'' Kerr said. "Like the Klay [Thompson]-[James] Harden thing. I've lied to you about five times on that. But I'm not lying this time. I haven't thought about the Knicks at all. This is obviously the game that we're focused on. We traveled across the country [Thursday] with the day off. The coaches watched tape on the flight. We did our walk-through this morning. And then after the game tonight, I can give you my Bill Belichick 'We're on to New York,' and we'll talk about the Knicks.''

Derek Fisher was Jackson's second choice as coach. Both Fisher and Kerr are in their first years as head coaches, though Kerr had experience as a general manager in Phoenix and a TNT broadcaster.

After the Knicks fell 92-88 to the Nets on Friday, Amar'e Stoudemire, who played in Phoenix when Kerr was the general manager, said the Knicks would have looked different under Kerr.

"It would've been a different type of strategy, we played a triangle offense, they play a bit of both, triangle and transition,'' Stoudemire said. "But we don't dwell over spilt milk.''

The Warriors are 39-9, and Kerr will be at the Garden again next weekend to coach the Western Conference for the All-Star Game on Feb. 15.

"Can't really argue with what [the Warriors'] record is and how they're playing. I'd say he's doing a great job," Fisher said. "In preparation for them this week, they have a really good basketball team.''

Asked where he'd be if Kerr had not backed out, Fisher sidestepped it.

"I'm not sure," Fisher said. "What if you had gone to the gas station and pulled the winning lottery ticket and won millions, would you still be standing there asking me that question?''
