PHOENIX — Seahawks general manager John Schneider said he believes John Idzik got a raw deal from the Jets.
Schneider worked with Idzik for three years in Seattle before the Jets hired Idzik in January 2013 as their GM. Idzik lasted just two years in the job, though. The team fired him last month.
"I felt bad for him," Schneider said Tuesday. "I think that, it's just my personal opinion that you should be able to hire a head coach. If you're going into a situation like that, try to make it work with the coach that's there and then if it doesn't, hire your own coach and see where it goes."
Idzik inherited Rex Ryan as coach, something he knew was part of the deal when he took the job. The belief was Idzik would have brought in his own coach for 2015 if he stayed, but owner Woody Johnson decided to clean house. Mike Maccagnan was hired to replace Idzik.
Schneider, who coincidentally did not hire his head coach, said he spoke with Idzik after he was fired.
"It's an entertainment industry, so you know going in that it's tough, especially in New York City," Schneider said. "We just talked about staying positive and what his next step is going to be. We're just good friends."
One of Idzik's desperation moves this season was to acquire WR Percy Harvin from the Seahawks in October. Schneider said it was not an easy decision to ship Harvin out.
"It was very difficult," he said. "You're talking about a person's livelihood, but we have to look out for what's best for the organization first and foremost. We had the support of our owner, which was huge. We discussed it for a long time with our owner. For one reason or another, it didn't work out. We had to be able to move forward. The Jets got real interested after the Thursday night game."
Schneider said when the Jets lost to the Patriots on Oct. 16, things moved quickly on the deal. The Jets traded a conditional pick to the Seahawks for Harvin. It can be a fourth-round pick or a sixth-rounder, depending on whether the Jets hold onto Harvin.
It does not sound like Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin thinks much of new Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Irvin played two seasons for Gailey when Gailey was the head coach there in 1998-99.
Asked Tuesday about what he thought of the hire, Irvin took a long pause and then said, "God bless them.
"I hope it works out. I know Todd Bowles is a good, young head coach. I worked with Chan Gailey in Dallas. It didn't necessarily go so well there when he was in Dallas. Hopefully, it works out better for him in New York."
Irvin said Gailey might be a better coordinator than a head coach.
"I don't know that that was Chan Gailey's strength — the area of motivation. He knows Xs and Os. The area of motivation is not his strength. Hopefully Todd Bowles is good at that."
The Jets hired Brian Heimerdinger as director of player personnel. Heimerdinger, 28, is the son of the late Mike Heimerdinger, who was the Jets offensive coordinator in 2005. … They also hired three coaches: Steve Marshall (offensive line), Kevin Patullo (quarterbacks) and Marcel Shipp (running backs).
