Police fan puts up new street sign honoring two assassinated cops

A Manhattan cop booster was so eager to honor executed detectives Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, he posted a makeshift sign renaming a Brooklyn street "Fallen Officers Way," but forgot one thing — permission from the city.

"I wanted to leave a lasting memory of them, something that would say, 'Look, these guys are heroes,' " said James O'Connell, 48, of Midtown, who erected the sign Friday on Myrtle Avenue, near where the cops were shot dead Dec. 20.

Not everybody was happy about the street-name switcheroo, including a cop patrolling the nearby Tompkins Houses, who demanded of O'Connell, "Who gave permission to do this?"

O'Connell fastened the green street sign — a replica of city-issued ones — to a light pole with black zip ties, pulling off the name change "swiftly and delicately," he said.

The Department of Transportation promised through a spokesperson to reach out to O'Connell before removing the sign.
