Man shot dead by cops ‘too much of a coward’ to kill self: suicide note

A man shot dead by San Francisco police left behind a series of suicide notes on his cellphone, claiming he tricked cops — who were already on edge from the ambush killings of two of New York's finest — into taking his life because he was "too much of a coward" to kill himself.

"You did nothing wrong," Matthew Hoffman, 32, wrote to authorities. "I provoked you. I threatened your life as well as the lives of those around me.

"You ended the life of a man who was too much of a coward to do it himself."

With the murders of Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos fresh on their minds, cops were forced to gun Hoffman down Sunday night after he approached them with what turned out to be an air-powered BB gun, the Associated Press reports.

"It's on all our minds," San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr told the AP, describing the killings of Liu and Ramos.
