Cops spending own money to replace expired bulletproof vests

City cops have been flocking to local body-armor shops and Web sites to buy replacements for their worn-out, expired vests since The Post reported that most of their bulletproof protectors are outdated, sources say.

A source said at least a dozen Manhattan cops also have purchased even more protection — ballistic plates to fend off rifle rounds — for themselves with their own money, some getting relatives to chip in, after two officers were assassinated by a police-hating madman in Brooklyn in December.

"Most cops, especially ones with time on, are more worried for their safety then ever before," a law-enforcement source said.

The city promised to buy more than 12,000 new vests since The Post's story last week, but some officers said they can't afford to wait.

"Unfortunately, it will take years" for the department to buy and distribute them, said a law-enforcement source.

Many cops have rushed to replace their vests by hitting shops such as Standard Law in Roslyn Heights, LI.

They have also been going to Meyer's in Downtown Brooklyn to get measured and then using the information to shop for bargains online.
