‘Mean Girls’ Daniel Franzese opens up on gay role in ‘Looking’

A decade ago, Daniel Franzese starred in "Mean Girls" as confident and "too gay to function" Damian, who teaches Lindsay Lohan's character about navigating high school life.

But it wasn't until last April that Franzese publicly came out himself. In a heartfelt open letter to Damian, Franzese shared the struggles of getting meaningful work as a gay actor.

Now, he's making a return to the spotlight on the second season of HBO's gay drama "Looking," premiering Sunday.

Franzese plays Eddie, an HIV-positive man who works at a homeless shelter for gay and transgender teens.

It's a big move for the 36-year-old actor — who also made headlines this year for his Sam Smith parody video, "Please Go Home," which has amassed more than a million views — as he's spent the last 10 years avoiding stereotype-ridden gay roles.

"What got me over my nervousness of playing Damian was that it wasn't cliché and it was forward-moving," Franzese tells The Post. "The [gay] roles that are being written now are different than they were 10 years ago. They're complex, intriguing people, whether…gay or not."

Case in point: Eddie's not just on the show to quip — Franzese's character will pair up with Frankie J. Alvarez's Agustín. But which guy was Franzese hoping would be his mate?

"You know, I really didn't care," he says, laughing heartily, "because it's a dice to roll with all hot numbers on it."
