6 things to know about breakout star Mark Ronson

You know the drill: When "Uptown Funk" comes on, you have to dance. It's the law.

DJ/producer Mark Ronson's collaboration with Bruno Mars is an infectious mix that recalls Prince, Michael Jackson and Chic — and currently sits at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is a cut from Ronson's album "Uptown Special," which came out Tuesday. "Uptown Funk" is Ronson's first hit, but few American fans realize he's been releasing music for more than a decade already.

Here are six things to know about the breakout star.

He's a New Yorker at heart

Ronson was born in London in 1975 but moved to New York City when he was 8 years old — just in time for the emergence of hip-hop, which provided his first major musical lessons. For his actual academic pursuits, he attended Collegiate School on the Upper West Side, and later, Vassar College and NYU.

His family is connected

Ronson's mother, Anne Dexter-Jones, is a New York socialite and jewelry designer; his father is real estate heir Laurence Ronson and his stepdad is Mick Jones of Foreigner. His younger sisters, twins, are also famous: DJ (and Lindsay Lohan ex) Samantha and fashion designer Charlotte.

He was a party-boy DJ

Ronson became a part of the New York elite in the late '90s as the DJ of choice for celebs like Tommy Hilfiger and Jay Z. In 1998, he was handpicked to spin at P. Diddy's legendarily lavish 29th birthday party at Cipriani, which cost the rapper more than half a million dollars.

Ronson proposed to the "Parks and Recreation" and "The Office" actress in 2003 (on Jones' 27th birthday), but they broke up a year later. In 2011, he married Agent Provocateur model Joséphine de La Baume.

He was best buds with Amy Winehouse

Ronson has produced music for Adele, Lana Del Rey and Lily Allen, but he really hit the big time when he worked with Amy Winehouse. He co-produced the tragic British singer's Grammy-winning 2006 album "Back to Black." Ronson admits to still being deeply affected by her death in 2011 from alcohol poisoning.

"No one's ever going to compare to Amy because of the talent she had and the unique bond we had," he recently told the Guardian.

He knows everyone in music

Ronson's new album "Uptown Special" is his fourth, and like his previous releases, it's brought to life by an army of lyricists and vocalists.

Ronson produces and plays guitar, but the album also features raps from Mystikal, lyrics from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon and harmonica parts from Stevie Wonder. For some guest vocals, Ronson even traveled through the deep South looking for undiscovered singers. "I have a concept and a bunch of song ideas," he recently told NPR. "But I need great vocalists . . . I couldn't do it all by myself."
