This week’s couple: Food for thought

Even if two people seem to be a good fit, a great setting can help bring them even closer.

This was the case for Joseph, 30, and Claire, 27, when they met at Australian restaurant Burke & Wills.

Joseph is an Army veteran and Claire works with vets, so conversation was easy from the beginning. But when they both agreed to share their orders — and didn't shy away from unique fare like kangaroo — they knew they might have a future together.

He said:

I immediately noticed how Claire's hair framed her face perfectly, and that her bright red lipstick was sexy and classy.

Once we started chatting, she immediately made me feel at ease and comfortable, as if we already knew each other. Turns out, we have a ton of similarities. We chatted about my experience in the Army and hers helping veterans with college scholarships.

I love a girl who's into sharing food, especially if she likes trying out new things, so Claire was a great partner at the table. Burke & Wills was amazing; the Australian décor was enough to make the place feel exotic but still authentic.

Claire has an extroverted charm. We exchanged numbers and I'm sure we'll see each other again. Considering how much we had in common, it'd be a shame not to.

She said:

Going into the date, I was nervous that Joe would be a Wall Street bro, since I knew he worked in finance, but he's not that sort at all.

He's an Army veteran, and I do work with vets, so there was a natural starting-off point for our conversation. From there we talked about plenty — crazy roommates, family, politics, religion.

We're both adventurous eaters, and I was happy he was down to share everything at Burke & Wills. The star of the evening was definitely the kangaroo loin.

At the end of the night, he walked me to the train and asked for my number. I gave it to him. Joe's a little different than my typical guy, but he was actually really great and a gentleman.
