Dan Boyle still out with mysterious illness

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of concern about Dan Boyle, as Monday night's 6-3 loss to the Lightning at the Garden was the second consecutive game missed by the Rangers defenseman with what were described as "flu-like symptoms."

Although the whole team and staff has been revaccinated for the mumps — with the virus going through the league and now in the Rangers' locker room via forward Tanner Glass — it is not believed that is what Boyle is suffering from. Coach Alain Vigneault said the 38-year-old Boyle went to the hospital on Sunday and had some blood work done, the results of which were not immediately available.

"As far as anyone can tell us so far, it's just the flu," Vigneault said before the game. "Just a longer version than the 24 hours."

Asked if there was any cause for concern for the health of his team, Vigneault shrugged.

"No, you get this stuff every year," he said. "So it's our couple players' turn to have it."

As for Glass, now having missed three straight and who is in the height of the mumps, Vigneault is not holding his breath waiting for his return.

"If the picture that I saw of him this morning is any indication of where he is right now," Vigneault said, "then it's going to take more than a few days."

With forward Chris Kreider returning to the lineup after missing Saturday's 5-2 win over the Flyers following the death of this grandfather, rookie Anthony Duclair was a healthy scratch after playing the past six.

The question now regarding the 19-year-old Duclair is whether the Rangers will allow him to participate in the World Juniors tournament, with Team Canada's tryout Dec. 11 in Toronto and the tournament going from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in Toronto and Montreal. If Duclair goes, he could return to the Rangers after the tournament ends.

"We talked about that possibility [and] we still need to talk about this as a group here," Vigneault said. "I know, from having been there twice, it's a great experience. Pressure, representing your country. So it's something that, moving forward here, we're going to discuss a little more in depth"

J.T. Miller and Jesper Fast both played over Duclair, and both only got one shift in the second period, during which there were five penalties. Fast scored a goal in the second period off a great feed from Derick Brassard, and Vigneault said after the game Fast is a "young player that's trying to find a way to contribute."

As for Miller, before the game Vigneault said even if he's in a fourth-line role — which Miller was again, alongside Dom Moore and Fast — the 21-year-old can still be a solid contributor.

"The way we're effective as a team is when we have that four-line rotation," Vigneault said. "When our tempo and pace is better, our puck execution is better, and when that's not there, that's when we get in trouble. If [Miller] deserves to be in that position, he'll be here."
