Brooklyn’s Riddick Bowe ready to take a bow at Barclays Center

There will be boxing in Brooklyn Saturday night when Golden Boy Promotions and HBO stage a card at Barclays Center. Sometime before the main event between middleweights David Lemieux of Montreal and Gabriel Rosado of Philadelphia begins, the latest Hall of Fame boxer to come out of Brooklyn should be acknowledged.

Former heavyweight champion Riddick "Big Daddy" Bowe will be among those honored when the Class of 2015 is enshrined this June at the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, N.Y. Also elected were former featherweight champion "Prince" Naseem Hamed, and former lightweight champion Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini.

Former junior flyweight champion Yoko Gushiken was voted in the old-timer category along with long-time manager Rafael Mendoza and referee Steve Smoger in the non-participant category. HBO broadcaster Jim Lampley and journalist Nigel Collins will be honored in the observer category.

Posthumous honorees include former flyweight champion Masao Ohba (35-2-1, 16 KOs), former middleweight champion Ken Overlin (135-19-9, 23 KOs) and publicist John F.X. Condon.

"I'm ecstatic!" Bowe said in a statement released by the IBHOF. "As a kid, this is what I dreamed of. I'm just so happy. For me, hard work and determination got me in the Hall of Fame."

Born in Brooklyn in 1967, Bowe won four New York Golden Gloves championships before capturing a silver medal at the 1988 Olympics. His pro career was highlighted by his trilogy with four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield. Bowe won two of the three bouts, including their first meeting, in 1992, an epic 12-round battle that handed Holyfield his first defeat.

"He was at his best in the first Holyfield fight," said Rock Newman, Bowe's long-time manager. "At 6-4, 240 pounds and having gone through a tough training camp there was only one heavyweight in the history of boxing who could have beaten him that night and that was Muhammad Ali."

Holyfield won the rematch in the infamous "Fan Man" bout, but Bowe stopped Holyfield in the eighth round of their third meeting, a non-title bout. The loss to Holyfield was the only defeat of Bowe's career. A gifted boxer and puncher, Bowe (43-1, 33 KOs) wasn't always enthusiastic about training under the late Hall of Famer Eddie Futch and often battled weight issues.

The latter part of Bowe's career was marred by two bizarre bouts in which Andrew Golota was disqualified for excessive low blows. The first disqualification triggered a riot at Madison Square Garden in which numerous people were injured.

Bowe fought just three times from 1996 to 2008, during which time he briefly joined the Marines before quitting. He also served 17 months in federal prison on a domestic violence charge.

"He's had some tough times, but I'm really happy he has this tribute," Newman said of Bowe's Hall of Fame selection. "Once you got him in the ring, he was a warrior. His training habits and lack thereof was well documented. But in the game of pugilism, he fought to win. Whether he was at his best or not, he was a fighter."

Brooklyn will be in the boxing spotlight when Lemieux (32-2, 30 KOs) faces Rosado (21-8, 13 KOs) for the NABF middleweight crown. HBO will televise. Lemieux has won seven straight fights, while Rosado (21-8, 13 KOs) is 0-3-1 in his last four, including title-fight losses to Gennady Golovkin and Peter Quillin.

"I believe in experience as a backbone," Rosado said. "If I use my ring smarts and experience, I think this could end early. In this fight I think the fans are going to see a lot more skill. I'm going to use my ring intelligence. You're going to see speed, power. It's going to be great."
