This week, the families of Officers Rafael Ramos and the newly married Wenjian Liu should have been preparing for the Christmas holiday. Instead they'll be burying the men they loved.
Feelings run high. Fellow police officers notably turned their backs on Mayor de Blasio Saturday. Some say this is unfair. Without blaming the mayor for the shooting, perhaps we might look at it for a moment from the cops' view.
This is a mayor who has suggested this is a racist police force that needs to be retrained to take black lives seriously. And if he and those marching in protest of grand-jury decisions in the Eric Garner and Michael Brown cases had loudly and forcefully condemned those who paraded down a New York City street last week shouting, "What do we want? Dead cops!" we missed it.
There are other striking contrasts. Take the profile of the suspects who've surrendered or been arrested in connection with last week's violent melee with police on the Brooklyn Bridge. One is a white union official making six figures. Another is a white CUNY professor. Two more have ties to Rutgers. Meanwhile, one of the cops assassinated Saturday is Chinese and the other a Latino.
For weeks, our elites have validated the "anger" of the protesters who have been taking over streets, bridges and tunnels. Given what looks like the explicit assassination of two innocent police officers in revenge for Eric Garner, could those now tut-tutting about disrespect for the mayor not show even a little of the same sympathy for police feelings?
