Why Jose Calderon’s ex-coach keeps calling him ‘beautiful’

Raptors coach Dwane Casey was chatting with reporters, talking about a "great guy, one of those guys you remember as a player."

Seconds later, the object of Casey's praise, Knicks point guard Jose Calderon (eight points, four assists), stepped up to say hello to his former coach.

"Hey, I was just bragging on you. Telling them what a great pig farmer you are," Casey said to Calderon.

Suffice to say Calderon's pig-raising business in Spain was not the heart of Casey's chat.

"He's one of the most beautiful leaders I've ever been around," Casey said. "He's a beautiful man. Very knowledgeable, always tease him about does he want to get into coaching. Hopefully he's smart and doesn't do it and stays with his pig business over in Spain."

And the admiration went both ways.

"I liked that with me he was always honest. He talked to me and told me what he needed to say. I had no problem with him at all. He was really a straight guy," Calderon said of Casey, his coach with the Raptors from 2011-13. "Some say he is a defensive coach because he really thinks defense wins games. But he was good for offense and defense. I felt comfortable both ways."
