Joan Rivers' daughter, Melissa, asked doctors not to do an autopsy on her mother — possibly dooming any chance of finding out exactly how the comic legend died, sources said.
Melissa Rivers was shattered when she decided to forgo an autopsy on her 81-year-old mom and had her remains quickly cremated after her death Sept. 4.
The city Medical Examiner's Office was obliged to honor Melissa's request because there was no criminal probe, only a state regulatory investigation, into the death, sources told TMZ.
The office has ruled that Rivers died of a lack of oxygen to the brain.
But without an autopsy, it might be impossible to find whether deadly errors were made during the routine surgery at Yorkville Endoscopy on Aug. 28 that lead to her death. Even if a doctor or nurse came forward, their statements would be considered only eyewitness accounts, TMZ said.
