Mayor’s Office investing $130 million to clean up parks

The Mayor's Office will invest $130 million in a massive effort to upgrade the most neglected parks and playgrounds in the city.

Mayor de Blasio was set to announce the ambitious plan Tuesday at the Bowne Playground in Queens. It will involve 35 parks citywide.

"It's a really great win for the neediest parks in New York," City Council Parks Committee Chairman Mark Levine said.

The parks being funded are located in some of the city's lowest-income neighborhoods. Among them are Ranaqua Park in Mott Haven in The Bronx, Saratoga Ballfields in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and Luther Gulick Park on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

The initiative was started by then-Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who set aside $80 million before he left office. De Blasio and the council added $50 million.

The parks chosen for the program have lacked investment for years.
