It's high tech vs. low tech in a California conference war.

The Wall Street Journal had Jack Ma and Tim Cook speaking while Digital media destination Re/code offered up Kim Kardashian.

The new Mrs. West was talking social media and Kardashian's effect on mobile platforms at a Half Moon Bay resort Monday night.

Meanwhile, WSJ.D had Alibaba CEO Ma and Apple CEO Cook scheduled to discuss the Chinese tech boom and Apple's next chapter at the same time in back-to-back sessions at the The Montage, Laguna Beach, just south of Los Angeles.

Re/code bosses Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher — both formerly of WSJ.D — are keeping the schedule tightly under wraps but according to its agenda had T-Mobile CEO John Legere on board as well as YouTube cosmetics star Michelle Phan with YouTube boss Susan Wojcicki.

Rival conference WSJ.D is serving up a host of big shots Tuesday, including Universal Music Group's Lucian Grainge and DreamWorks Animation's Jeffrey Katzenberg.
