Judge denies media requests for accused Patz killer’s taped confessions

A judge denied media requests for copies of the videotaped confessions of Etan Patz's accused killer because it could jeopardize his chance for a fair trial, court papers show.

The cumulative attention this case has been paid since the disappearance of young Etan Patz in 1979 has been unprecedented," wrote Justice Maxwell Wiley in his decision issued Monday.

"This defendant's right to a trial by a fair and impartial jury is of paramount importance. That right would be severely compromised by duplication at this juncture of the recording, electronic and written, of the defendant's statements."

The Manhattan Supreme Court hearing is determining whether Pedro Hernandez's taped confessions – the only known evidence tying him to the horrific crime – will be admitted at trial.

The former bodega worker admitted to choking to death 6-year-old Patz and leaving his little body in a box on the street.

But lawyers for the diagnosed schizophrenic have argued that cops used psychological coercion to coax a false confession.

Forensic psychiatrist Michael Sweda, an expert for the prosecution, testified Monday that Hernandez was mentally capable of waiving his Miranda rights and had no obvious signs of intellectual disability.
