Ex-Yankee Cone hoping his Royals win the series

David Cone grew up in Kansas City and made his major league debut with the Royals, so he's paid close attention to his former team's incredible postseason run to their first World Series since 1985.

"It makes you wonder about chemistry," Cone said. "The 'hot' factor. A lot of baseball pundits wouldn't agree with that, but there really is something to the human element."

The combination of timely hitting and fantastic bullpen work have helped the Royals come from behind to beat the A's in the wild-card game, sweep the Angels in the ALDS and then the Orioles in the ALCS.

"Their bullpen has been incredible," said Cone, who was at an event Thursday night held by Keurig coffee. "It's like they have three closers and in a short series, that strength is really accentuated."

And he's hoping they finish the job.

"Beating the Yankees to get there in 1980 and then winning it in '85 really put Kansas City on the map," Cone said. "It gave us something to be proud of and it would be great to see that happen again."

Cone got called up in 1986 and then signed with his hometown team again in 1993. He won the Cy Young a year later in the strike-shortened 1994 season.

"After that, we were dismantled," said Cone, who was traded to Toronto. "Union activity."

He ended up winning four titles with the Yankees and has played with two players who have emerged as candidates for the Yankees' hitting coach job, which opened up after Kevin Long was fired last week.

Cone believes both Dave Magadan and Chili Davis would do well in The Bronx — or in Queens, since the Mets have a vacancy, as well.

"Even when they played, they loved to talk hitting," Cone said.

"Chili would sit in the back of the plane on trips and talk to anyone about hitting … or life," Cone said. "Magadan was a great hitter. Very technical. He would stand around the batting cage and talk mechanics. I always heard him say, 'Slow feet, quick hands.' "

Whoever gets the job will be entrusted to turn around an offense that struggled each of the past two years.

"They'd be great choices because they're cerebral," Cone said. "And since they've both played in New York, they'd know what they were getting into."
