Ex-Grimaldi’s employee opened knockoff in China: suit

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 22 Oktober 2014 | 18.18

A former Grimaldi's Pizzeria worker illegally opened a knockoff version in China, according to a $25 million Brooklyn federal lawsuit filed by the owners of the famed chain.

They claim that the copycat even poached staffers from the Dumbo location to knead dough at the China outlet, which allegedly features nearly identical menus and signage.

Former Grimaldi's staffer Joey Silvestri joined forces with Brooklyn businessmen Marcelo Pevida and Jia Ju Tao to launch the Chinese Grimaldi's earlier this year without any right to do so, according to the court papers.

"In or about 2013, Defendants conspired to open a Pizzeria restaurant in Shanghai, China, that mimics the Grimaldi's Pizzeria restaurants operating in the United States," the suit says.

Reached by phone, Pevida said he has no connection to the Chinese Grimaldi's and didn't know it existed.
