‘Walking dead’ premiere breaks cable ratings record

There's no stopping "The Walking Dead" juggernaut.

The zombie-apocalypse series, which shattered AMC records by drawing over 17 million viewers in its Oct. 12 season premiere, added another 5 million viewers when Live+3 data (DVR viewership, On Demand, etc.) was factored in.

That brings its total to 22.4 million viewers, by far the most-watched drama in the history of cable television.

Most networks now use the L+3 yardstick — and also L+7 data — to gauge how their shows are performing, rather than relying on ratings from an episode's original airdate (what's known as "Live+ Same Day" ratings).

"The Walking Dead" didn't really need any more data to prove it's TV's hottest scripted show, since it's pulling in the kinds of numbers usually reserved for live sports telecasts, particularly NFL Football.

Finishing behind "The Walking Dead" in the Live+3 race this week was FX's "American Horror Story: Freak Show" (nearly 10 million viewers) and "Sons of Anarchy" (6.7 million), Comedy Central's "South Park" (3 million) and HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" (2.6 million).
