Apple Pay has OK first day

Apple's new mobile payment system launched without a glitch on Monday — but don't shred your credit cards just yet.

The service, which lets folks pay for stuff with the touch of a finger, worked flawlessly at the dozens of retailers, including McDonald's and Duane Reade, that have accepted the technology, according to a test by The Post.

But it's useless elsewhere.

New Yorkers with a Starbucks addiction, for example, will have to wait until the end of the year to use Apple Pay to buy a latte. And even then, it will only be available through Starbucks' mobile app — not for purchases at the register.

There's a good reason retailers like Starbucks will wait — perhaps forever — to accept Apple Pay at their registers: They want to track customers' purchases and Apple Pay's security system won't let them.

Another downside of Apple Pay is that retailers are currently only allowing the mobile payments via their apps, which have to be downloaded individually, unlike going to a Web site.
