From Sleepy Hollow to Rye, some of the most spook-tacular Halloween events are taking place outside the city

Pictures don't do it justice; the Great Blaze is something best seen for yourself.

Wander through the field outside the historic Van Cortlandt Manor and take a look at thousands of intricately carved, lit pumpkins, while music plays for an effect that's delightfully otherworldly.

The Legend Behind the 'Legend'

Take a daytime tour through the celebrated author Washington Irving's cottage, which showcases a number of items related to his masterpiece "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."

Watch a shadow puppet performance of the spooky tale and experience some of Irving's other stories on a guided walk through the woods.

Prepare to lose your head as you walk through the twisted maze at Philipsburg Manor, where "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is taken to dark and gory extremes.

Classic Evening Lantern Tour

If you weren't scared of the dark before taking this lantern tour, you will be by the time it's over!

Take a two-hour lantern tour of the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and visit some of Sleepy Hollow's most famous (underground) residents, including Andrew Carnegie, Brooke Astor and William Rockefeller.

Recommended for ages 10 and up (some people might find the pace of the walking tour challenging). Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in October from 7 to 9 p.m, and also from 10 p.m. to midnight. The popular Westchester event returns to its original Playland location this year, noting, "With our original location by the Long Island Sound completely refurbished, the only things left churned up by Hurricane Sandy are the surviving scary creatures still lurking and awaiting our guests!"

Experience the Crypt Walk, the Haunted Wine Cellar, the Creepy Morgue, Tunnels of Doom and more.

If the last time you read "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" was in high school, it's time to revisit the Washington Irving tale. Have a historic Halloween with master storyteller Jonathan Kruk as he recounts the adventures of Ichabod Crane, Katrina Van Tassel and the wacky Headless Horseman.

Jay Ghoul's House of Curiosities

Pull up a chair for a Halloween séance inside the Gothic mansion of Lyndhurst.

There's a monster in every family, and this one happens to live in a gothic country house right on the Hudson. Enjoy a nighttime tour of Lyndhurst, the majestic former home of rail magnate Jay Gould, that's less spooky, more real estate porn.

The mansion was also the setting for this year's supernatural Colin Farrell movie "Winter's Tale."
