She got the last laugh on him.
Legendary crooner Bobby Vinton told The Post on Friday how, true to form, old pal Joan Rivers managed to zing him one final time when she wrote she wanted him to serenade her corpse at her funeral.
"I want Bobby Vinton to pick up my head and sing 'Mr. Lonely,' " Rivers wrote in her book, "I Hate Everyone . . . Starting with Me,'' referring to Vinton's signature tune.
Vinton, 79, said she was just busting his chops after repeatedly opening for him in Las Vegas.
"Backstage, Joan would always say, 'Hey, Mr. Lonely! How you doing tonight?' " Vinton, who also was famous for "Sealed With A Kiss," chuckled.
"When she first made the request [in the book], I didn't really expect her to do that, especially since she had to listen to me sing 'Mr. Lonely' so many times while we performed in Vegas.''
The former 1960s heartthrob said he only wished he were in good enough health to be at Rivers' funeral in Manhattan on Sunday.
"I would love to attend, but I will not be able to make it because I'm getting over the flu and a case of pneumonia," Vinton said from his home in Florida.
"I would be there as soon as I could if my doctor didn't tell me I physically couldn't make the trip."

He recalled how gutsy Rivers was.
"We performed at the MGM Grand and the Riviera, and I had a lot of teen girl fan clubs, which would come out every night and pack the front rows," Vinton remembered. "And Joan, being one to always speak her mind, wouldn't let me hear the end of it."
"Look at all these goddamn girls! The same 50 girls every night!" she would say.
"My wife loved her," he said. "Whatever she would say — 'Tramp this,' or, 'Tramp that' — it was a humor women loved to hear. She showed the public a woman could speak her mind, which was a rare quality to have back then."
Vinton noted the comedy icon's warmhearted personality backstage.
"She was a much different person behind the scenes, straight and nice as she could be," Vinton said.
He said he "had no idea she would become the legend she was."
"Once she became a superstar, I would let people know that Joan Rivers used to open for me back in the day!" he said.
"We're really gonna miss her," Vinton added. "There will never be another Joan Rivers."
