Embattled Miss America Kira Kazantsev admitted Tuesday she was kicked out of her Hofstra University sorority, but insisted it was over a bad joke — and not cruel hazing.
Kazantsev gave vague details in saying she was involved in hazing at Hofstra, while denying Monday's Jezebel report that she had badly abused younger co-eds.
"Under the broad definition of hazing, yes I was involved with some of those activities while I was at Hofstra," Kazantsev told ABC's "Good Morning America."
"At the time, unfortunately, that was just the culture of the university."
Kazantsev said she was hazed as a pledge, forced to memorize and recite trivial information and made to stay up all night to complete menial tasks.
"And I was kind of brought up through the organization thinking that was appropriate behavior when clearly … today I understand that's just not true," she said.
Kazantsev recalled that, as a senior, she was asked to reach out to sorority alumni for an upcoming event.
"In the e-mail I basically made a joke," she said. "And that [joke] was taken out of context and forwarded to the national office."
Asked to explain the allegedly offensive quip, Kazantsev was again vague: "That we would make the evening scary for the pledges, when that event never came to fruition and none of these things that I've been accused of ever happened or were ever intended to happen."
Kazantsev, 22, who speaks three languages and maintained a 3.6 GPA at Hofstra has made domestic violence her platform, making hazing allegations all the more disturbing.
"Yes I was involved, under the broad definition of hazing at some point – but never ever in a million years what this (reported abuse) is claiming to hold," she said.
"I'm going to take this negative and turn it into a positive."
When asked what she'd tell little girls who look up to her, Kazantsev said: "It's OK to make mistakes, that's life."
