Lady Gaga: ‘Modern culture humiliates celebrities’

Lady Gaga is well aware of the downside of fame.

From being ridiculed in the press for her outlandish outfits to being criticized for her music, Gaga told Australia's "60 Minutes" that what it means to be a celebrity has changed greatly over time.

"The celebrity and the singer was held in such a beautiful way by the media, by the press, by the audience," said the 28-year-old about her jazz partner Tony Bennett's career start in the 1950's.

"I think that now we're arrived upon this modern culture of humiliation with celebrities," she followed up.

When the reporter asked if Gaga is controlling or feeding the fame beast, Gaga said, "It's funny for us because the world looks at us almost like characters. And fame is like a beast or a monster. But for me and Tony we get to see the side of fame that the world hasn't sensationalized. We see the fans and the smiling faces."

Gaga came under fire recently for a slew of Instagram snapshots in a nude monokini. "#bodyrevolution Proud at any size, because the inside is what really counts," Gaga captioned one posed poolside picture. "Plus, it's all how you pose! just ask the supermodels!" she added.

Almost immediately, fans began ripping into the pop star. Gaga responded, "I'd rather be fat than be shallow."
