A cast against-type-James Gandolfini did fine work in the LA-set romantic comedy "Enough Said," which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival less than three months after his untimely death, but a widely predicted posthumous Oscar nomination failed to materialize. One may be more likely for "The Drop," which returns the erstwhile Tony Soprano to the world of crime, albeit at a lower rung and without the explosive temper.
Revenge is a dish best eaten cold, or at least slowly simmered, for Gandolfini's Uncle Marv, a former loanshark who lost a Brooklyn bar named after him to a Chechen crime boss. He still grudgingly manages the place with his mild-mannered nephew Bob (cast-against-type British actor Tom Hardy, who's terrific even if his accent wavers somewhere between the Borough of Churches and the Ozarks).
The film, which premiered Saturday at the Toronto International Film Festival ahead of its Sept. 12 opening in New York and Los Angeles, centers on Bob, who still lives in his late parents' untouched apartment — and meets a Nadia (Noomi Rapace) abused by a scary creep Eric (Mattias Schoenaerts) with criminal connections after the latter dumps a wounded dog in her garbage.
Bob cares for Nadia and the dog even as Eric tries to provoke Bob and extort money from him — and may be involved in a holdup at the bar, which is occasionally used by the mob as a drop point for gambling money.
Gandolfini's Uncle Marv, who lives with his sister, has long nursed a grudge against the Chechens. And Bob fears that when Uncle Marv's is chosen as the drop bar on Super Bowl Sunday, things aren't going to turn out so well for Marv's fantasy of revenge and a wealthy retirement.
Well directed by Michael Roskam from a screenplay Dennis Lehane adapted from one of his short stories, the darkly funny "The Drop" is a fitting coda to Gandolfini's all-too-short career.
