De Blasio finally asks feds for security clearance

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 13 September 2014 | 18.18

Just days after The Post revealed that Mayor de Blasio doesn't have a federal security clearance, he's applying for it. The clearance is essential because it's the only way to access sensitive security information from the feds.

"We're in the process of getting the clearance . . . the practical reality is that in the event of an emergency, the appropriate information will be shared with the city," de Blasio said Friday.

He said he applied "recently."

Sources said the lack of clearance doesn't just impact emergency response, but also the ability to adequately prepare for crises. No top mayoral aide is cleared for sensitive national security info, the sources said.

This leaves it to the NYPD to decide how much information de Blasio and his deputy mayors can get. That's because NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton and Deputy Commissioner John Miller are among the few officials who have been provided codes to access secure phone lines to chat with federal officials — or to otherwise access sensitive intelligence.
