City’s public school teachers out sick at increasing rate

Some teachers won't be getting gold stars for attendance.

A total of 13.2 percent of the city's 74,000 public-school teachers called in sick for 11 or more days during the 2013-2014 school year — the most since at least 2009, according to the Mayor's Management Report.

The previous school year, only 11.8 percent took off that much time.

Officials had no immediate explanation, calling the trend a "small increase, but nothing substantial."

But the jump is 12.3 percent in a single year.

Teachers get 10 paid sick days a year and have to produce a doctor's note if they want to take off more time.

Teachers-union officials speculated that more members were simply taking maternity leave. Three-quarters of the city's teachers are women.

Another union source said teachers are taking "mental-health days" because of increased pressure to produce results under the more rigorous Common Core curriculum.

"These people are burning out a lot sooner and a lot of people are going to psychologists," said the union source.
