Beating the beheaders

In the short time since he was elected Australia's prime minister, Tony Abbott has proved himself a determined world leader in the fight against Islamist terror.

In June, the PM declared that "it's certainly no time to be reducing the emphasis on good intelligence which has been a very important part of Australia's response to the terror threat."

This week, that intel paid off when his government foiled a directive from Afghanistan to behead innocent Australians in Sydney.

Two things that have special resonance for New York caught our attention:

First, more than 800 federal and local police executed 25 pre-dawn raids in 12 different Sydney suburbs to capture the suspects.

Second, Prime Minister Abbott says the plans to behead a random Australian was only days away from being carried out.

The events Down Under only confirm that Mayor de Blasio and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton weren't kidding when they warned about the threat of ISIS targeting New York.

But the success of Australian authorities in foiling this plot ought to underscore for the mayor and his police commissioner the foolishness of the decision to shut down NYPD's perfectly legal program to map communities where Islamist terrorists might seek help and sanctuary.

We're with Tony Abbott: This is no time to be closing down sources of vital intel.
