Toms River flows into Little League semifinals

Kayla Roncin had stolen the spotlight, a 12-year-old girl thriving on Little League's biggest stage with the boys.

On Tuesday, her Toms River Little League teammates earned a few headlines themselves, bashing their way to a come-from-behind 10-5 win over West Salisbury Little League (Md.) Tuesday morning in Bristol, Ct., to remain undefeated in the six-team Little League Mid-Atlantic Regional.

In Toms River's third pool play contest in the regional, Roncin was finally retired, going 0-for-2, after picking up three hits in the first two games. Her teammates picked up the slack, and now with one pool play game remaining, Wednesday at 10 a.m. against defending Mid-Atlantic Regional champion Newark National (Del.).

Toms River (18-2) is assured a berth in the single elimination semifinals on Friday.

"We're guaranteed a game on ESPN," Toms River manager Pete Avallone said. "That makes these kids happy."

The 11- and 12-year-olds from central New Jersey were in a 4-0 hole after one inning, but they limited West Salisbury to just one run over the final five innings and exploded themselves for eight runs over the final two frames.

"We've gotten into the habit of falling behind early. It's a bad habit to get into, but we can't say enough about how these kids don't quit," Avallone said. "They keep plugging away. They don't get rattled. The bats came around at the end of the game and we got some big hits."

Christian Wood picked up the win with a 1¹/₃ innings of relief and drove in the game-tying run with a single in Tom's River's five-run fifth. Colin Baker plated the go-ahead runs with a two-out, bases-loaded single to right-center field. Wood added a two-run single in the sixth and Nick DeRose picked up his second save of the regional, working out of trouble in the fifth.

"Christian's been hitting the ball very well over the last couple of weeks," Avallone said of Wood, who had three hits on Tuesday. "It's not a surprise at this point. We expect him to do it. He's been great. I can't speak highly enough about him."

Whatever happens Wednesday, Toms River is two wins away from a spot in South Williamsport, Pa. Success at this level is nothing new to the New Jersey town. Toms River reached the Little League World Series in 2010, while Toms River East, led by Cincinnati Reds All-Star Todd Frazier, won it all in 1998.

"It's great. These kids grew up in town playing baseball for Toms River. They all know about the reputation and history of it," Avallone said. "They enjoy it, they embrace it, and they take great pride in it wherever they are."
