NYPD warns Times Square characters not to demand money

The NYPD handed out these flyers to tourists in Times Square warning them about costumed characters.

Elmo, Spider-Man, Cookie Monster and their costumed cohorts got a stern talking to from the city's superheroes in blue Saturday, when the NYPD went to Times Square to warn them not to demand money from tourists.

The officers not only laid down the law to the cartoon characters, they distributed flyers telling tourists in several languages that they can take photos free of charge — stressing that tipping is completely optional.

This time at least, no punches were thrown.

On July 26, a Spider-Man had been caught on video slugging a cop who told a prospective customer not to pay.

"Since that Spidey hit the cop, police have been hassling us." a different Spider-Man complained Saturday night.

"They [police] are ruining the business,'' said the 29-year-old, who refused to give his name, but said that he's from Morocco.

Buzz Lightyear added his two cents: "We're not stealing from people.'' he said. "We just want to see them smile.''

Nana Ray, aka Minnie Mouse, agreed, saying of the flyers, "They're a disgrace. I have a 9-month-old baby to support."
