A truck driver had to be airlifted out of a New Jersey creek early Tuesday after the tractor trailer he was driving careened off of a New Jersey highway and was left dangling in flames over the waterway, authorities said.
The driver was heading north on the New Jersey Turnpike near Overpeck County Park in Ridgefield, when he lost control of the wheel, a New Jersey State police source said.
The trailer went over the guardrail and was left hanging over the edge of an overpass, at which point the driver either fell or jumped into the creek, the state police source said.
The victim whose age is unknown at this time, was rescued by helicopter, and flown to an area hospital for treatment, authorities said.
His condition is unknown at this time.
A portion of the Turnpike remains closed while State Police conduct an investigation into the crash, police said.
The resulting traffic is expected to cause delays at the George Washington Bridge.
