Nine city thrift shops were caught selling banned children's clothing with dangerous drawstrings, during a crackdown ahead of back-to-school shopping, the state Attorney General's Office said Monday.

Four stores operated by Goodwill Industries and three run by the Salvation Army were among the offenders, all of which yanked the illegal items from their shelves after getting official "cease-and-desist" letters.

Kids' clothes with drawstrings at the neck have been banned since 2003, following the dragging death of a Westchester girl whose jacket's drawstring got snagged on a school-bus handrail.
