Hamas attacks Israeli troops with bomb-covered donkey

This suicide bomber is a real ass.

Hamas militants sent a donkey strapped with explosives on a suicide mission toward Israeli troops in Gaza over the weekend — forcing the soldiers to open fire and blow up the rigged beast.

The donkey began to approach the soldiers Friday in the southern city of Rafah, but the troops had already been informed by the Israel Security Agency that terrorists intended to "strap explosives to animals and send them in the direction of ground forces," the Israel Defense Forces reported.

"Sending an animal to its death to serve terrorist purposes may seem shocking but . . . wasn't the first time Palestinian terrorists adopted this despicable tactic," the IDF said.

The IDF says it's not the first time animals have been used in such a despicable manner. Israel first encountered an animal terrorist attack in 1995, when a Hamas militant rode an explosives-laden donkey cart toward soldiers. The donkey and terrorist were killed. The soldiers were unharmed.

Such attacks usually involve donkeys and horses carrying carts loaded with explosives. Now IDF is seeing Hamas terrorists strapping explosive belts to other animals, like dogs.

News of the tactic came as The Israeli military entered the second day of its ground operation in Gaza Saturday, pounding Palestinian sites with airstrikes and demolishing more than a dozen tunnels it said could be used by militants to carry out attacks.

A total of five Israelis and at least 342 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched its military campaign on July 8.

On Saturday, Palestinian commandos disguised as Israeli troops infiltrated a tunnel, killing two Israeli soldiers and injuring several others. Hamas said that 12 of its fighters joined the fight and that at least one Palestinian militant of them was killed.

Militants jumped out of tunnels and fired at soldiers in two other clashes. Two of the gunmen were killed. The Israeli army said tranquilizers and handcuffs were found in one clash, indicating the gunmen "intended to abduct Israelis."

Meanwhile, an Israeli Bedouin was killed when a Hamas rocket hit his encampment in southern Israel. Four of his family members, including two children, were wounded.

Israel's chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, warned of more "moments of hardship," suggesting Israeli deaths could mount.

As diplomats struggle to broker a cease-fire, international advocates are condemning the number of children killed in the conflict. Two 6-year-olds and a toddler died in airstrikes and shellings Saturday, Palestinians reported.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Saturday that talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed.

"Sadly, I can say that the call for a cease-fire has not been heard, and on the contrary, there's a risk of more civilian casualties that worries us," he said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is slated to meet Hamas political leader Khaled Meshaal on Sunday to discuss a truce, an official close to Abbas told Agence France-Presse.

Conditions of the truce include "an end to aggression against the Palestinian people," lifting the blockade on the territory and opening the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.
