Katie Nelson, the digital deputy managing editor for the Daily News, was revealed Monday as the Huffington Post's new national editor.

Sources said she handed in her resignation about a week before the latest round of cutbacks rattled the News. Her defection was seen as a blow to the paper's drive into the digital realm at the expense of the printed side.

David Handschuh, the veteran photographer who had to be dug from the rubble while shooting photos for the paper during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, was also among the layoffs said to total nearly two dozen.

On the business side, veteran ad salesman Greg Haygood was let go, along with ad account exec Clara Doyle. Both had been with the News 20-plus years.
