Congressman refuses to deny possibility of impeaching Obama

WASHINGTON — A top GOP congressman has refused to take impeachment of President Obama off the table Sunday.

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) was pressed four times by "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace as to whether Republicans would consider impeachment if the president takes new executive action to defer deportations.

"This might be the first White House in history that's trying to start the narrative of impeaching their own president," Scalise said in his first major TV interview since his election to House majority whip.

Wallace pressed: "Again, on executive action to defer more deportations, what will the House do?"

Scalise, a Tea Party enthusiast, wouldn't give a clear answer.

"We're going to put options on the table to allow . . . the House to take legal action against the president when he overreaches his authority," Scalise said.

A new CNN/ORC International poll found impeachment is unpopular among Americans, with just 33 percent believing Obama should be removed from office. But 57 percent of Republicans support it.
