Brooklyn-born Fred DeLuca, co-founder and president of the Subway sandwich chain and the man most responsible for growing it into the largest restaurant chain in the world, is back in the hospital, a source told The Post.
Last year, DeLuca was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of leukemia and had a bone marrow transplant.
"Fred continues to be actively involved in the management of the Subway business," a spokesperson for the Milford, Conn., chain said. "Recently he had a reaction to his ongoing leukemia treatment and was re-admitted to the hospital. He is expected to be released soon."
DeLuca, who co-founded the chain 49 years ago, told the USA Today just last month he was back running Subway and at 90 percent back on the job. A video of an interview with DeLuca and accompanying article was titled, "Subway CEO back in saddle after cancer scare."
Subway has more than 40,000 locations worldwide and DeLuca recently announced plans to expand the brand to 100,000 sites.
